FOTC is great but the show versions are better.
The album is good but I prefer the show versions of most of the songs. They are more authentic and feel 'funnier' than the album versions, which underwent too much producing and engineering in the studio for my taste. There were also a couple of my favorite lyrics left out on this album. 2008-08-26

Flight of the Conchords - S/T 9/10
Finally, New Zealand's fourth most popular guitar-based digi-bongo acapella-rap-funk-comedy folk duo has released their first real album. While fans have been able to hear Bret and Jemaine's highly entertaining brand of humor on HBO and live albums, Flight of the Conchords is their first full-length record.
While there's something to be said for Flight of the Conchords' live records and actual concerts, which is one of the funniest things I have been privileged to attend, their debut album does manage to translate a good portion of their irreverent humor into the studio. The songs, as usual, don't disappoint, running the gamut from anti-war sex anthem "Ladies of the World" to the funky bedtime jam that Marvin Gaye has tried so hard to perfect, "Business Time." Who can resist seductive statements like "two minutes in heaven is better than one minute in heaven?"
Most of the songs benefit from the added instrumentation and production, with "The Prince of Parties" sounding like the Beatles if they stayed in India longer and were a comedy duo, and "Boom" is much more understandable and palatable with Bret's clarified vocals and the faux-reggaeton production.
The only disappointment is the utter lack of new songs. While a compilation might be a necessity for casual fans or newcomers, Conchord lovers will already know pretty much every song on the disc, and one would've thought with the exposure the two have been getting, they would've jumped on the opportunity to release new material. But you can't begrudge what they've already created, which is pure comic gold.

Totally Entertaining
These guys are the most talented, hilarious and straight up entertaining band in many moons. In the middle of listening to an amazing musical arrangement you just crack up with their lyrics. Brillant, brillant, brillant cd. 2008-08-08

Horrible
This deserves 0 stars actually. There is no and has never been any place for humour in music. Especially in rock. It always comes over as coy somehow. Now, I have never seen the "comedy" seried from which this music comes but at least taken out of situation it does not fare well. One song of its kind is ok, 2 are tiring and then you want to stop. And actually the first song is the worst so it does not go well from there. The styles are way too varied as well in order to provide any kind of unity as an album. Anyone serious about music should avoid this kind of tiresome student project. 2008-08-04
