The Best Musical Ever Written!
I have recently received the assignment of directing this show in 2001 (the 225th anniversary of the signing.) In preparation, I have gotten copies of both the original and revival soundtracks. Both are magnificent, but Brent Spiner -- I'm afraid you are no William Daniels! He IS the DEFINITIVE John Adams. The music of this show is unparalleled, especially when a person is aware of how much of it came directly from the actual words of the Founding Fathers. God Bless America!

Fine version of a "revolutionary" show
Strong recording of what has become a minor classic of American musical theater. It doesn't quite preserve the entire score (the 1997 revival CD is more comprehensive), and some performers were clearly suffering from vocal wear-and-tear the day the show was recorded, but it is nevertheless performed with passionate conviction. Particularly good: William Daniels (of course) as hot-headed John Adams; Paul Hecht's cultured John Dickinson; and Ron Holgate's high voltage Richard Henry Lee (which earned him a Tony Award).

Magnificent!
1776 is without question my favorite show. William Daniels brings John Adams to life, as does Howard DeSilva for Ben Franklin. Most of all it brings to light the humble beginnings of our Nation in a way that everyone can understand and enjoy. I would encourage everyone who reads this not only to enjoy the music, but to see the show either on video or, even better, on stage.

A fine representation of Broadway!
You get William Daniels, Ron Holgate, and Paul Hecht in this CD. With few females and Howard da Silva's understudy, there are a few dark spots. Nonetheless, a wise buy!

A good album!
William Daniels and Ken Howard are extraordinary. But without lead Howard da Silva, this album isn't the same. Betty Buckley is a good singer, but Virginia Vestoff isn't quite the gem. Overall, this album is a great addition to any collection!
