The Older They Get, They've Gotten Better Yet
Disclaimer: I've not heard every song on the album.
That said, I don't think I could. It's not like they're a bad band, it's just when they get into the hard rock stuff, I don't care for it too much, such as the title track. Songs like "The Last Night" don't float my boat either.
However, "The Older I Get" makes up for most everything else, as it has to be one of the best songs of the year. If you've not heard the song, please do, you'll be doing yourself a favor. I actually first heard it on mainstream radio, but that doesn't make the song any worse, it's just a great song. It's very catchy, and very emotional. Although I personally don't relate to the song's message, I think a lot of others would.
Overall, most of the album is suited for the hard rock crowd. Other songs I just don't get. But the one redeeming song saves the day. If you don't get the album, get "The Older I Get" I promise you, you won't be disappointed. Oh, get the mainstream version, because it has better production value than the album version.

Why do almost all the songs sound the same?
I wanted to like this CD. But let's face it, after the first 2 songs it all just starts to sound cloned. Is this what a good album is supposed to sound like? I remember when every Skillet track had a unique sound, but alas, those days are gone.
If you like music that all sounds the same as the last track, this is a great CD for you. Otherwise purchase the first, second, and last track by themselves. They are really the only tracks that matter.

Gift
I purchased this as a Christmas present. I know my daughter will like it. This was on her Christmas list of gift ideas to her. I have not heard this particular CD, but I know it has to be good for my daughter to request it. She has good taste in music 2007-12-18

A Feast of the Senses
I'm actually new to Skillet, and I think that previously they showed promise with some excellent songs, and some almost there songs. Well, Skillet is really cooking now! They got the mixture of ingredients and spice just right. This album is hot! The beat is awesome, lyrics meaningful, and the tunes and rhythms change enough to keep you constantly fed, if not delighted.
The appetite gets thoroughly whetted with "Rebirthing", a mix of ethereal with rock in the most delicious flavor. It's true that for a couple of songs it slows after that, but not in a way that offends. Think of it as salad and bread. It grabs you again with "Better Than Drugs" - many peoples' favorite. Personally, I find it slightly grating and cliche', and am most likely, out of all the songs, to skip it after a sip or two. But then again, I'm not an ale drinker.
"Comatose", the main course, is the king of taste, the barbecue smoked salmon of song.
Okay, so you've tasted two A+ songs and some nice B ones. Call it good, a choice buy of an album. No! They aren't done cooking yet. A couple of veggie courses, and then the potatoes, "Falling into The Black", a rock beat spiced with a touch of rap- ANOTHER A+ song. It's the kind where you ask the waiter what that spectacular flavoring was. Okay, now we're done right? That had to have been desert. So you expect a couple bites of fruit or a napkin to finish with. No! Just one fruit bite, and then they bring out a flaming desert that turns heads with the rocking, slightly creepy melodies of "Whispers in the Dark". Then sit back, relax and end this feast of the aural cavities with a Wow-Thanks-Prayer; "Looking For Angels", As a chow-hound who has purchased numerous albums for one song - only to find myself constantly gagging and spitting from the others on the album, I'm liking this one. Now I'm really hungry! I think I'll go pull out the Skillet and indulge!

BUY IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This album was on sale at my local christian book store and was available to listen to samples via the barcode. I've never heard of Skillet before and I listen to a couple of contemporary Christian FM channels too. Guess I lived under a rock but now I see the light! My son has played cello since the 4th grade so the orchestral accompaniment on some of the tracks ROCKED! This music appeals to both young and not-as-young alike! 2007-12-09
