Tons of FUN!! This is as close to PERFECTION as it GETS!!!
Let me start by saying...WOW! This is one the greatest compilation albums ever created by any artists anywhere. There is not one bad or even mediocre song from beginning to end. If you are a fan of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, or you just happen to like California music more than the rest, then this is a perfect choice for your C.D. collection. All of the more popular songs are here, as well as some incredible songs that have not been played on the radio. The sound quality is awesome, and the liner notes and photos are just too cool. I really got a buzz off of the last song on the album, which is called "Save the population". It is beautiful, and it could make a difference in the way a lot of peolple view their own ideas about love. I have to say that as time goes by, The Red Hot Chili Peppers have only gotten better at writing songs that really mean something to people all over the world. Even my friends in the Philippines love this band! Absoulutely Five stsrs, and I say this album is a Perfect Ten! Hell Yeah!

A Fine Snapshot of the Band, 89-03
No, it's not in chronological order. Yes, it totally ignores everything before BSSM (except for 89's "Higher Ground"). Yes, it has too much emphasis of BSSM and Californication. Yes, it doesn't even give us the best track off One Hot Minute ("Aeroplane"). Those misgivings, however, still don't compel me to give this collection anything less than 5 stars.

First off, it does a fine job at giving newbies a glimpse of the band's peak works. BSSM, Californication and By the Way all get a decent amount of representation. This is whence the public's favourite tracks stem from, so naturally, they get a big emphasis. All the big hits are here, so this gives people a chance to snatch them all at once without having to dish out 15 bucks per album just to get a few famous songs.

Second, it gives fans 2 new songs. These are quite enjoyable, if I might add. In addition, it also gives fans access to the non-album track "Soul To Squeeze." This is a good inclusion, but is it necessary? Oh well. They could've also given us the Chili Peppers' cover of "Rollercoaster of Love" from the Beavis and Butthead film.

Now, some might fret about not getting a complete overview of the band's career. But really, why should this set be charged with such a responsibility? The earlier "What Hits?!" compilation does a good job at culling (generally) the best material from the band's patchy 80s albums. This one sticks to the better-known tracks from their better-know epoch.

All in all, if you don't own a RHCP album and you like a bunch of their songs, start with this. Sure, it'll get you hooked on the band and their work and you'll probably end up buying all their stuff later anyhow. But hey, at least you'll have some neat non-album tracks with you in the end :D

its chili peppers, so you know its good
however, its not what it could be. its missing some notable songs, including their biggest recent hit Can't Stop. it also has some fairly obscure 'hits' like Universally Speaking. however, it is a great album. although it may seem weird to consider the Red Hot Chili Peppers rock legends, they will be elligible for the rock and roll hall of fame in less than 3 years.
