Odelay rules. Beck cracks me up with his ability to make fun of proper genres, all the while producing flawless examples of that sound. he's an artist on many levels, never better crafted than on this release.

One of his better 90's albums
Beck is easily one of the most overrated musicans of the 90's, his music just dosen't do the job. His lyrics are interesting sometimes to say the least, but it's not hard to grab onto. Odelay though, has 7 good songs, so while it's no classic, I found it rather interesting. I don't love it either, but so far,it's not so bad.

The seven songs work because they are really cool, yet sound like musical, and have good melodies with some hilariously bizarre lyrics to go with it. And the music actually fits it, such as the song Derelict. The lyrics are as odd as the music. That's what Beck should do, not to break rules just to break them (to quote Janitor-X).

Sure, it's no classic, but at least six songs (1,2,4,5,8,10) are really good. The other, okay, it's not really worth mentioning, but I thought those songs were really cool. They aren't short, that's why ODelay earns a

Pivotal Beck
This is the album that solidified Beck more so in the mainstream after his first hit single, Loser, on Mellow Gold. So far it's his most popular album, so if you're looking for some Beck after hearing a tune on the radio this is probably the one you want to go for.

OLE ODELAY
My first Beck and the first time I heard him period. I bought it on a suggestion from relatives I can trust. Boy I am HAPPY!! Anyone just wants a taste of Beck this album has no set style but I am always tapping my foot or humming melodies. The lyrics of Zappa and musical capabilities of Mozart. Open your imagination and enjoy.

I'm the enchanting wizard of rythym...
In typically schizophrenic style, Beck released the wildly uneven "Odelay" and cemented his stature in the freaky-lo-fi music scene. Lyrics and musical styles lurch from point to point with no discernable logic, defying known structure and co-existing. "Hot Wax" raps, funks and blows a folksy harmonica - and gets away with it. At this stage of the game, only the Beastie Boys were experimenting this madly and succeeding the way Beck was.

Unlike the previous "Mellow Gold," "Odelay" also had serious misfires. I can take a pass on "Lord Only Knows" and "Minus," where to this day I can still listen to "Gold" in its entirety. But the highs are incredible:

"Devil's Haircut"
"Hot Wax"
"Where It's At"
and "High 5"
are all stone classics.

Beck was still going crazy with the cheeze-whiz on this record, and he was also one record away from his first less than stellar CD ("Mutations"). This was the last time he was still young and goofy, but it's worth it just to groove on the funkiest white-guy refrain of the 90s as frat cats all over the globe started chanting "I got two turntables and a microphone...."
