Rock n' Roll is NOT Dead
With the release of this year's "Attack and Release," The Black Keys carved out a unique niche in the history of Rock n' Roll. In a year marked by more hype than usual - Wal-Mart's "Rock N Roll Train" and Best Buy's "Chinese Democracy" top the list - true rock n' rollers can take comfort in the Black Keys. "Magic Potion" their 2006 release, summarizes their earlier CD's and provides a glimpse into the evolution of the 2008 Keys.
The title itself tells listeners what to expect. As it spun in my CD player, I came to realize that R & R is not by any means dead. No "wanna be" tunes in this collection. Rather, the music here is certainly the magic potion that has been sadly missing from the over-produced, over compressed and poorly sequenced pablum that the R & R faithful have endured since the death of Grunge (in itself an overblown style that was better than nothing). From "Just Got To Be," the album's opening track to "Elevator," the last track, the fun and excitement don't let up. No filler here. Instead, a collection of songs that I guarantee will leave the listner satisfied and wanting more. Thank the gods that there are several Black Keys CD's out there. So buy it - don't burn it. Keep the rock n' roll spirit alive. The Black Keys do it in a no holds barred way. Enjoy!

Blues Rock At It's Best
The Black Keys could take any old blues tune and turn it into something truly magical. Arguably their best album, Magic Potion is 40+ minutes of this raw-sounding blues rock. And boy, they make it fun along the way.

The opening cut "Just Got To Be" is riveting and sounds excellent when blasted stuck in traffic. From there, the CD never disappoints along the way. There isn't a single song that could be considered weak.

The latter half, some of the more epic songs are "The Flame" and "Goodbye Babylon", which the Keys are known to play back-to-back live.

Magic Potion was worth every penny, and it's original sound will never grow old.

INCREDIBLY MAGICAL
The Black Keys must have travelled in a time machine from 1969 to today, having listened to Robert Johnson and John Lee Hooker, then heard what the Rolling Stones and The Yardbirds did with it, adding some heavy drums that sound like baseball bats pounding ... I just couldn't believe my ears when I first heard this, then hearing this amazing album, one of the best discoveries I've made lately. While I'm shocked the Keys haven't made it big (not so much considering the crap that does) I'm kinda glad, that way they won't get corrupted by stardom, like so many good ones have. My wife who doesn't like anything newer than Skynyrd was moving to it. That says it all,

Magic they do have!
These guys know how to rock; they are as loose and as fuzzy as Hendrix was in his early days (without the screeching guitar obviously). If you like classic rock, you'll like these guys. Their other albums are equally as good.
